October is the awareness month for shelter dog adoption! According to the American Humane Association, this month long awareness event was established in October 1981 as an annual event to encourage people to save lives and enhance their own lives by adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group. Thirty-two years later, that message is as strong, true and important as ever, as millions of dogs in shelters await adoption every year.
Many shelters across the country will be partaking in events for Shelter Dog Month ranging from fairs and fundraisers to reductions in their adoption fees. Some as low as ten dollars, in honor of the tenth month of the year! How can you pass up such a great opportunity to save a life, support your local shelter and add unconditional love to your life?
There are a few ways in which you can support adoption awareness month:
– Ensure you have your pet fully ID’d. This is the number one way your dog will be able to find his way home should be get lost. So many people fail to properly ID their pets. This leads to your pet finding their way to shelters and perhaps going unclaimed.
– Spay or Neuter your pet. Keeping the population down greatly reduces the amount of unwanted pets who find their way in the shelter system.
– Support your local shelters and rescue organizations. Donations of items needed, your time to help run events and/or care for the animals as well as financial assistance are all methods of assistance required. Do what you can!
– ADOPT! With so many animals trying to find forever homes in our shelter system, adoption is crucial. Dogs that are unable to find a way out of the shelter are euthanized. Thousands of perfectly healthy pups are put to sleep due to the fact they are not being adopted. Please, stop by the shelter the next time your family is ready to add some love to it! Save a life!
